Have you watched Stephen Neales video in the Applied EI ezine this month? Stephen talks about the importance of EI in coaching for both the coach and the coachee. He proposes that a large % of coaching is a waste of time especially if the EI of the coach is not sufficiently developed.
If you're a coach, what's your experience of your coaching development? How much emphasis was on Self Awareness, Other Awareness, Self Regard and Regard for Others?
I am beginning a Diploma in Corporate and Executive Coaching in January/February 2008. Once I get the full package (so to speak) I will give you a firmer answer as to content. I would presume that all delegates on the Post-Grad Diploma (of which I hope to be one) will also be able to answer this question. In general though, I think that this varies from provider to provider. Also, an interesting debate would be wether personal background (e.g. counsellor, carer, manager) has any impact. In Samaritans there is an expression; 'aim for the pain'. Perhaps as coaches we need to look for this, beit personal or corporate from a standpoint of 'here to help you move', not to fix etc. Also, I think that the Self Awareness aspects are critical, if nothing else they let you know what you can deal with and the various options that you may have.
I think Stephen raises a vital issue. How many coaches do you know who are coming from the place of Rescuer or Fixer? How about yourself?? As Maureen asks - what techniques can we use to ensure that we don't slip into a 'Not OK' place?
